Lecture 1

The Study of the Pilgrim Trails to Uddiyana

Time: Mar 11, 2025 (Tue)  |  7:15-9:00 pm

Uddiyana (Swat valley and the adjacent areas) was considered the first stop on the way to the Buddhism world. In Tibetan Buddhism, Uddiyana is recognized as the birthplace of Guru Padmasambhava and Vajrayana. Hundreds of Chinese and Tibetan Buddhist pilgrims, such as Faxian, Songy Yun, Xuanzang, Wukong and O rgyan pa made pilgrimages to the kingdom of Uddiyana from the 5th to the 8th centuries AD. But the travel routes of these pilgrims to Uddiyana are difficult to be identified by today’s historians and archaeologists. The presentation will try to reconstruct a clear picture of the pilgrim routes from Xinjiang to Uddiyana.
