Lecture Abstract

This series of lectures seeks to demonstrate the complexity of entanglements among the text, ritual, and imagery and how Buddhist texts, rituals, and images serve as important vehicles in the transmission and preservation of Buddhist culture and religious practice. The lectures include different perspectives on ritual techniques of visualization, imagination, and visual material culture to illuminate the efficacious power of linguistic, mental, and material imagery in shaping a religious experience. The lectures will also examine how Buddhist texts, images, and rituals communicate the individual and communal realities through mental, verbal, and physical activity imbued by symbols and metaphors that can be assertive and at times subversive.
